U.S. Municipality Undergoes Mainframe Assessment to Aid IT Strategy

A heavily populated municipality in the United States is currently locked in an IDMS ADS/Online and COBOL environment, but plans to migrate away from IDMS in the near future. Modern Systems will perform a mainframe assessment to assist with planning and setting a direction for the conversion from IDMS and from ADS/Online and COBOL. The assessment will include the analysis of the IDMS dictionary and databases, as well as the COBOL applications that reside outside the IDD. As part of the mainframe assessment, the customer will receive statistics for each IDMS-based application, details on utilities in use, replacement options for their databases and code base, and a road map to move them forward.

North American Technology Provider Converts IDMS to Oracle on Linux

A North American technology provider made a strategic decision to reduce the current and future application support, infrastructure, and operational costs associated with their IDMS-DC, COBOL, and ADS/Online applications. The applications in scope manage and integrate hundreds of very complex systems for a group of related businesses. The company’s goals were achieved by engaging Modern Systems for a conversion to an Oracle relational database and the Dell TPE/BPE environment on Linux which addressed both the online and batch processing requirements. The initial assessment performed by Modern Systems found 37,500 components in the application inventory with only 2,300 actually in use. All of the multi-lingual programming code was automatically converted to run as COBOL on the Linux server in the Dell TPE/BPE environments.

North American Rail Company Migrates CA-IDMS to SQL Server

In order to address escalating software costs and a declining pool of talented support staff a North American rail company made the decision to move away from their mainframe. After carefully researching the options they decided to use Modern Systems to migrate their large CA-IDMS based applications running ADS/Online (ADS/O) to COBOL running on SQL Server. Modern Systems began the project with their standard assessment which revealed that of the 48,000 components existing in the legacy system only 14,000 components were actually used. European Insurance Company Stays with IBM but replaces IDMS with DB2

The goals of a large European insurance company were to eliminate their use of IDMS, expand their use of their chosen DB2 technology, and manage their applications on a centralized z/OS mainframe. Modern Systems performed the conversion of the IDMS databases and languages to DB2 and COBOL using the highly automated DB-Shuttle tool suite. The project was completed in 12 months including all levels of testing. The technology change included the replacement of the IDMS databases and data, the ADS/Online (ADSO) applications, all IDMS-DC and IDMS-DB COBOL, a set of IDMS Easytrieve modules, and the JCL that processed against the IDMS databases, programs and utilities. The resulting DB2 applications are functionally equivalent to the former IDMS applications. No re-training of the end-user community was required. All applications provide the same level of performance in DB2 as in IDMS. This customer met their goals and received the added benefits of lower costs and an increased ability to hire skilled team members!
