Super Market Chain Converts Adabas/COBOL to DB2/COBOL

An innovative super market chain wanted to remove their Software AG licenses and move to a more modern relational database platform. The original environment of Adabas/COBOL used ADA SQL to access the data from the applications. The target platform was IBM’s DB2 database with COBOL. Modern Systems began the project in April of 2013, re-assessing the existing environment to determine the actual scope of the project. An assessment had been completed in 2012 to help the company understand the actual nature of their application. The assessment revealed that of the 82,000 objects existing on the mainframe, only 19,000 objects were actually in use and only 500 of those components were related to the conversion project. This reduced the scope of the project significantly and saved the super market chain hundreds of thousands of dollars while helping management make informed decisions. Automated conversion technology was used to convert the ADABAS data structures to DB2, provide extraction programs to extract, transform and load the data from ADABAS into DB2, and convert the COBOL ADABAS direct call code to COBOL SQL code. The project went live in March of 2014 and is currently in the post production warranty phase.

Poultry Producer Replatforms Adabas/Natural to SQL Server on ATP

A large poultry producer on the East Coast of the USA needed to quickly and cost effectively move two Adabas/Natural applications to a new platform to reduce licensing fees while application replacement could be coordinated. Modern Systems began the assessment phase in January of 2014, collecting data on the Natural programs, subprograms, maps, and help routines as well as the JCL/PROC streams that make up the two applications. The legacy system, an IBM 210 running z/OS will be replaced with a Microsoft Windows Server environment. The database conversion process began in April, 2014. This step includes converting the Adabas database to a relational SQL Server database using the automated DBShuttle tool. The conversion parameters are guided by the customer to include naming standards required in the future. The customer performs the extraction and load process in their own environment to retain security of sensitive data. The replatform of the Natural applications to the Modern Systems ATP platform running in Windows began at the same time and moves into a test phase soon. The projected go-live date for the replatformed system is June of 2014.

European Insurance Company Stays with IBM but replaces IDMS with DB2

The goals of a large European insurance company were to eliminate their use of IDMS, expand their use of their chosen DB2 technology, and manage their applications on a centralized z/OS mainframe. Modern Systems performed the conversion of the IDMS databases and languages to DB2 and COBOL using the highly automated DB-Shuttle tool suite. The project was completed in 12 months including all levels of testing. The technology change included the replacement of the IDMS databases and data, the ADS/Online (ADSO) applications, all IDMS-DC and IDMS-DB COBOL, a set of IDMS Easytrieve modules, and the JCL that processed against the IDMS databases, programs and utilities. The resulting DB2 applications are functionally equivalent to the former IDMS applications. No re-training of the end-user community was required. All applications provide the same level of performance in DB2 as in IDMS. This customer met their goals and received the added benefits of lower costs and an increased ability to hire skilled team members!

Health Organization Chooses ATP to Replatform Adabas/Natural Application

An international health organization needed to move from their legacy IBM mainframe environment to a locally controlled Windows 2008 R2 server. The Adabas database and data is being converted to a relational database on Microsoft’s SQL Server 2008, using the automated Modern Systems DB-Shuttle technology. The online Natural applications will be imported into the Modern Systems ATP software for replatforming on Windows. End users will continue to interact with the online applications using familiar screens and keyboard shortcuts. The Natural programmers will continue to maintain the applications in the same syntax, while accessing an enhanced developer environment that interacts with the new relational database. The initial assessment for this project was completed in January. The application replatform began in February with testing commencing in March. The project is scheduled to go live in May, 2014.
