A large U.S. insurance provider has been working for several years to replace their core policy applications with new applications operating on non-mainframe platforms. Modern Systems was 
engaged to perform a Mainframe Assessment to ensure that all required applications and subsystems on the mainframe were replaced with new applications prior to decommissioning it. During these years, the customer policies on the mainframe continue to be accessible during the runoff phase of the policy life cycle.
The mainframe assessment included the analysis of almost 18 million lines of application code used by almost 50,000 components. Over twenty individual applications were isolated and decisions regarding the future of some of the remaining smaller custom applications and reporting subsystems are still in progress. The use of all mainframe DB2 and VSAM data was also documented so that decisions on required data archiving could be made.
